It is a hectic week with final preparations for the Federal Parliament presentation of the 25 Most Remarkable Teens of St. Kitts and Nevis 2012 scheduled for this Wednesday evening.
Parents, nominators, school administrators and of course, Federal Parliamentarians, will come together in Chambers on this special night to honor the unique talents and accomplishments of this year’s remarkable group of young people.
I am excited as I make the media rounds, talking on air about the kids, the categories, and the program - without giving up names -spreading the word, and encouraging people to watch on television Wednesday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. as ZIZ carries the event live.
And the kids are excited. For all the new honorees it will be their first time in the Chambers of Parliament, and for last year’s recipients, it may be their final appearance as they proudly read the profiles of their peers to a packed audience and viewers watching the live television feed across the Federation.
It has been a productive tenure for the group honored last year and Wednesday night they will have come full circle. All 2011 recipients were mentored throughout the year, beginning with their participation in a leadership development workshop in early January, continuing during their membership in the Most Remarkable Teen Youth Council (MRTC), and as leaders of the newly founded Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC), an important branch of this peer leadership program that organizes and supports national service activities.
Ongoing peer leadership programs such as the 25 Most Remarkable Teens can create safe, affirming school and community environments by sharing two main beliefs: young people are a powerful influence on one another, accepting more readily what they hear and see modeled by their peers, and young people can strengthen neighborhoods and nations by their ability to promote positive change in the youth population.
I will be begin to post names, pictures, and profiles of the 2012 honorees on Wednesday, and will continue to post five profiles a day until you have met all the recipients and have had the opportunity to read the inspiring stories of each remarkable teen.
And so it goes on Monday, two days left and counting down.
